Mission Statement

 

The Twenty-First Century Before and After School Program strives to provide safe, educationally enriching, fun and rewarding experiences for students during the hours when other activities or appropriate child care is not available.  Children have the opportunity to engage in activities that are beneficial emotionally, physically, and educationally.  The program includes snacks, homework help, specialized tutoring, music, arts and crafts, sports, games, field trips and many other creative and cultural activities.  The program is conducted by staff trained to meet the needs of children and to provide positive adult role models.

 

Grievance Policy

 

Parent input concerning the program is important.  Please share your comments with the Program Coordinator.  All questions concerning policies and procedures of the program should be addressed to the Program Coordinator at the school.  You will find information regarding how to file formal grievance procedures at the Overton County Board of Education office, 302 Zachary St, Livingston, TN.

Program Hours

 

Regular School Day

6:30 - 7:30 AM: Homework / Tutoring

3:00 - 3:15 PM: Snack provided by school

3:15 - 4:00 PM: Complete homework with teacher help / Individualized tutoring

4:00 - 4:50 PM: Fun and educational enrichment activities

4:50 - 5:00 PM: Dismiss

 

The Afterschool Program does not operate when school is not in session.  There are no before or after school activities during Fall, Christmas or Spring breaks, snow days, holidays, or professional development days, etc.  Please see your school calendar for regular school schedule.

 

Snacks

 

Snacks are provided for participating children.  If a participating child has food allergies, a medical form should be on file in the school office.  Allergies must also be listed on the program Registration Form.

 

Severe Weather Policy

 

School closing early due to severe weather:  Parents will be notified by phone call from the staff as soon as the early closing is announced by the Director of Schools.  Students will ride the regular bus or be picked up by parents.  There will be no afterschool program and the afterschool bus will not run.

 

School opening late due to severe weather:  The before school program will be cancelled on late days.  

 

Registration Forms Requirement

 

Registration forms must be completed and on file with the Twenty First Century Coordinator for each child to be enrolled and attending.  New registration forms must be filled out for each school year.  State Childcare Guidelines require that all students be officially registered in the program in order for them to attend.  Students who are not registered may not stay for program activities and program staff cannot be responsible for any child who is not officially registered.

 

Student Sign Out and Sign In

 

Please check with the Program Coordinator for the student sign out location.  All children must be personally signed out each afternoon by an approved adult.  Approved adults are those you listed on the Registration Form.  Children will not be allowed to wait for parents in the parking lot.  They will not be released to commercial transportation personnel (i.e. taxi drivers), nor will they be released to anyone whose behavior may place the child(ren) in any immediate danger.  Identification will be required for pick up.  Notify the Program Coordinator in writing if a person other than those authorized on the registration form will be picking up a child.

 

During morning or summer programs, each child should be signed in as soon as he/she arrives at the school.  Parents must escort all children into the building and sign them in personally.  Children are not to be left unattended on school grounds before or after regular program hours.

 

Late Pick Up

 

If students are not signed out by an approved adult by 5:30 PM (or thirty minutes after the end of the program day), the following procedure is implemented:  After all parent contact numbers as listed on the Registration Form are attempted and no communication from the parent has been received by 6:00 PM, the Police or Sheriff’s Department and/or Department of Children’s Services may be called for assistance with the child(ren).  Repeated late pick up of children will result in dismissal from the program.

 

Attendance Policy

 

Attendance is crucial for your child to succeed in our program.  It has been found that intensity and duration are necessary for students to have improvements in report card grades, behavior, and state assessment scores.  If your child(ren) miss more than 5 consecutive days of the program when they are in attendance for the regular school day, they will be withdrawn from the program and put on the bottom of the waiting list for re-entry.

 

Parent Involvement

 

Families are an important part of the program.  Family nights, newsletters about program activities, bulletin boards with announcements, and individual feedback to parents on each child’s participation in the program helps create the best experience for each child.  Parent suggestions on enrichment offerings are always appreciated.  The Program Coordinator will keep parents informed about special events in the program through postings and newsletters.  Please check our website for special announcements.

It is very helpful to keep our program informed of any changes in a child’s environment such as illness in the family, a change in living location or any other stressful situation that may be important to the child.  The staff will be able to better meet the needs of the child if they are aware of these situations.

 

Sick Child Policy

 

School and Afterschool policy require that a child be picked up as soon as possible in the event of illness while in the program.  The “No Nit Policy” on lice for Overton County Schools also applies to the program.  A child found to have lice or nits will have to be picked up from the program.  Students may return to the afterschool program when the school Nurse has cleared the child to return to the regular school day.

 

Medication

 

If a child has to be given daily medication during program hours, a medication form must be on file with the Program Coordinator.  Regular medications are to be listed on the Registration Form.  Also, a standard medication form must be on file in the school office.  Regular school policy applies to all medications both prescription and non-prescription.  Please refer to the school handbook for additional information.  Antibiotics and over the counter medications such as cough syrup, aspirin, and cold medicines cannot be administered in the program.

 

Broken/Lost/Stolen Personal Items

 

Students and parents are strongly discouraged from bringing toys or personal items from home.  The afterschool program will not be responsible for broken, lost or stolen items including toys, clothing, backpacks, books, food items, eyewear, money, electronic items, cell phones, jewelry, and any other personal item.  Please follow regular school day policy with regard to personal items brought from home.

 

 

Withdrawal Policy

 

The program reserves the right to withdraw a child for any of the following reasons:

·         Repeated failure of parents to pick the child up from the program on time.

·         Failure to provide the Program Coordinator with current emergency/medical information as stipulated by Tennessee State Childcare Guidelines.

·         Continuous disciplinary problems.

·         Inappropriate conduct of parent or guardian.

 

Students dismissed from the program may not be eligible for re-enrollment for the remainder of the current school year.  Readmission determination will be made by the Program Coordinator and the School Principal.

 

Discipline

 

Children enrolled in the program are expected to exhibit behavior which does not disrupt or interfere with the school climate or the learning process and social interaction of other children.  The program staff will enforce school rules throughout the program hours.  Please refer to the school handbook.  Parents will be notified in writing if a major discipline problem occurs.  School policy will be followed.  Repeated disciplinary incidents at school during program hours or on the afterschool bus can result in the student being withdrawn from the program.  Overton County School Zero Tolerance policies will be followed.

 

The following behaviors are considered inappropriate during before and after school program activities.  These behaviors may result in immediate suspension.  Parents are encouraged to go over these rules with their children and reinforce appropriate behaviors at school and on the bus.

 

1.      Possession of weapons, contraband, and other dangerous objects (Zero Tolerance Policy Applies)

2.      Fighting, wrestling, spitting (with or on peers or staff)

3.      Destruction of center/school property

4.      Destruction of personal property of another person

5.      Vulgar Language, Cursing

6.      Improper display of private body parts

7.      Disrespectful behavior to other children or staff

8.      Climbing on desks, tables, cabinets, etc.

9.      Playing in the bathrooms (crawling under stalls, climbing on sinks, splashing water, turning on/off lights etc.)

10.  Throwing balls, or other outside equipment while inside the building

11.  Stealing

12.  Physical attacks on staff or other students (Zero Tolerance Policy Applies)

13.  Tackle football

14.  Improper use of program and school equipment

15.  Throwing objects (rocks, sticks, desks, tables, etc.)

16.  Leaving group without permission (i.e. running away, hiding, etc.)

17.  Behavior deemed inappropriate and unacceptable by the Program Coordinator, School Principal or bus driver.
